Mission Summary

Chang’e 5-T1 was a Chinese test mission designed to prove the technology needed to bring samples back from the Moon. Launched on October 23, 2014, the spacecraft traveled around the Moon and returned to Earth, testing the high-speed reentry and recovery systems required for the future Chang’e 5 sample return mission.

After flying behind the Moon, the return capsule headed back toward Earth and performed a challenging “skip reentry,” briefly bouncing off the upper atmosphere to reduce speed before landing. The capsule successfully returned on November 1, 2014, demonstrating that China could safely recover a spacecraft traveling back from lunar distance.

Although Chang’e 5-T1 did not land on the Moon or collect samples, it was a critical engineering step. The mission proved key technologies that later enabled Chang’e 5 to successfully return lunar material to Earth in 2020.
