Mission Summary
Lunar Orbiter 3 was NASA’s third mission in the Lunar Orbiter program and focused on obtaining the detailed photographic reconnaissance needed to prepare for the Apollo Moon landings. Launched on February 5, 1967, the spacecraft entered lunar orbit four days later and concentrated on imaging candidate landing sites at the highest resolution yet achieved by the program. Its photographs allowed engineers to study the terrain in unprecedented detail, helping determine whether the selected sites were safe for astronauts and lunar spacecraft.
During its primary mission, Lunar Orbiter 3 exposed 211 photographic frames, including exceptionally detailed views of several Apollo candidate landing sites and a famous image of the Surveyor 2 crash site. Partway through the mission, however, the spacecraft developed a problem with its film transport system that prevented all of the exposed film from being read out. Although approximately one-quarter of the photographs were never transmitted to Earth, the mission had already returned enough high-quality imagery to accomplish its primary objectives.
Lunar Orbiter 3 demonstrated both the value and the challenges of photographic reconnaissance in lunar orbit. Despite the partial loss of imagery, the mission significantly improved NASA’s understanding of the lunar surface and provided critical information used to refine Apollo landing site selection. After completing its extended mission, the spacecraft was intentionally impacted onto the Moon on October 9, 1967.
