Mission Summary
Luna 17 was the Soviet mission that successfully delivered Lunokhod 1, the world’s first robotic rover to operate on another celestial body. Launched on November 10, 1970, the spacecraft soft-landed in the Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains) on November 17, where the rover drove down a pair of ramps and began exploring the lunar surface. The mission marked a major milestone in robotic space exploration, proving that a remotely operated vehicle could conduct scientific investigations far from Earth.
Over the next ten months, Lunokhod 1 traversed more than 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles) across the lunar surface while transmitting over 20,000 television images, more than 200 panoramic photographs, and a wealth of scientific data. The rover analyzed the mechanical properties and chemical composition of the lunar soil, measured radiation levels, and studied the Moon’s surface using its suite of scientific instruments. During the frigid lunar nights, it survived by closing its lid and using a radioisotope heater to protect its electronics.
Lunokhod 1 demonstrated the remarkable capabilities of robotic planetary exploration and established many of the techniques later used by Mars rovers. Originally designed to operate for about three lunar days (roughly three months), it greatly exceeded expectations before communications ended in September 1971. Its success paved the way for the even longer-lived Lunokhod 2 mission and remains one of the Soviet Union’s greatest achievements in lunar exploration.
