Mission Summary
Pioneer 1 was launched on October 11, 1958, just ten days after the agency opened its doors. Inherited from the military's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), the mission was designed to build upon the lessons of the Pioneer 0 launch vehicle failure two months earlier.
The objective remained highly ambitious: escape low Earth orbit, complete the transit to the Moon, and fire an internal braking rocket to enter a permanent lunar orbit. From this vantage point, the 84-pound (38 kg) probe was equipped to map the lunar surface using a pioneering infrared television scanner and record deep-space environmental data.
The mission proceeded past the launch pad but suffered an early trajectory error. A programming flaw caused the Thor-Able rocket's upper stages to steer slightly too high and fast, leading to an early engine shutdown that left the vehicle short of the velocity needed to escape Earth's gravity. Realizing the probe would not reach the Moon, engineers attempted to fire its onboard motor to place it into a high Earth orbit instead. However, the unexpected trajectory had exposed the vehicle to extreme temperatures, freezing its battery systems and leaving the engine unresponsive.
Pioneer 1 ultimately climbed to a then-record ballistic altitude of 70,770 miles (113,830 km) before falling back to Earth. It burned up in the atmosphere 43 hours after liftoff over the South Pacific. Despite failing to reach its destination, the mission was a notable partial success; its active sensors successfully transmitted the first real-time data mapping the bands of the Van Allen radiation belts and charting the micrometeoroid density of near-Earth space.
