Mission Summary
Pioneer 2 was launched on November 8, 1958. Jointly managed by the newly formed NASA and the U.S. Air Force, the mission incorporated several structural and technical modifications based on the propulsion and heating failures that had derailed its two predecessors.
The primary objective remained unchanged: break free from Earth's gravity, traverse deep space to the Moon, and enter a stable lunar orbit. Weighing slightly more than the earlier variants at 87.3 pounds (39.6 kg), the spin-stabilized spacecraft featured an upgraded scientific payload. In addition to a magnetometer and cosmic ray counters, engineers replaced the crude television scanners of Pioneer 0 and 1 with an advanced, line-scan television system designed to transmit a primitive image facsimile of the lunar surface.
The flight ended abruptly in the upper atmosphere. While the Thor first stage and the modified second stage performed correctly, a catastrophic failure occurred immediately following their separation. The rocket's third-stage solid-propellant engine failed to ignite. Without the final thrust necessary to reach orbit, the unpowered spacecraft separated from the dead booster and coasted to a peak altitude of just 963 miles (1,550 km).
Pioneer 2 fell back toward Earth and burned up in the atmosphere over east-central Africa 42 minutes after liftoff. Despite its brief flight duration, the probe's instruments remained active during the ballistic arc, transmitting data that confirmed a higher density of micrometeoroids and a more complex radiation profile near Earth than previously recorded.
