Mission Summary
The turning point for NASA's early lunar exploration efforts. On July 31, 1964, Ranger 7 returned the first high-resolution lunar surface images taken by an American spacecraft. After six previous Ranger missions with limited or failed results, Ranger 7 proved the spacecraft design and restored confidence in NASA’s robotic lunar program. The space probe returned 4,316 images during its final 17 minutes before impact, revealing lunar surface details and helping scientists evaluate terrain for future crewed landings.
To prevent a repeat of the short circuit that doomed the previous mission, engineers insulated the power switches and changed the launch sequence so the camera systems couldn't turn on too early. The precautions worked exactly as intended. The rocket provided a smooth ride into space, and a mid-course steering adjustment put the probe on a direct line toward the Sea of Vapor.
The final seventeen minutes of the flight changed everything for the American space program. On July 31, 1964, as Ranger 7 plunged toward the Moon at over 5,800 miles per hour, its six cameras warmed up and began transmitting clear television pictures back to Earth. The probe successfully beamed back 4,316 high-resolution images, capturing smaller and smaller craters right up until the moment it impacted the surface. The pictures gave scientists their very first close look at the fine texture of lunar dust and rocks, making the mission a total triumph.
