Mission Summary
Zond 3 was a Soviet lunar flyby mission that completed humanity’s first photographic survey of the Moon’s far side. Launched on July 18, 1965, the spacecraft flew past the Moon two days later, using an advanced camera system to capture images of areas that had not been seen during the earlier Luna 3 mission.
During its flyby, Zond 3 photographed the lunar far side and transmitted images with much better quality than those returned in 1959. Together with Luna 3, these photographs provided the first nearly complete view of the Moon and allowed scientists to create improved maps of the hidden hemisphere.
After passing the Moon, Zond 3 continued into deep space, where engineers tested spacecraft systems, communications, and imaging technology over long distances. The mission was an important bridge between early lunar exploration and later Soviet deep-space missions.
