Mission Summary
Apollo 11 launched from Cape Kennedy on July 16, 1969, carrying Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. The crew flew in the command and service module Columbia and the lunar module Eagle. The mission carried the central objective of the Apollo program: land astronauts on the Moon and return them safely to Earth. Eight years after President John F. Kennedy set that goal before Congress, Apollo 11 turned it into a completed mission.
After launch, Apollo 11 entered Earth orbit, accelerated toward the Moon, and docked Columbia with Eagle for the translunar coast. The spacecraft entered lunar orbit on July 19, 1969. The next day, Armstrong and Aldrin separated Eagle from Columbia while Collins remained above in orbit. Eagle descended toward the Sea of Tranquility, but the final approach did not unfold as a simple automatic landing. Armstrong guided the lunar module past a hazardous area and touched down about four miles beyond the planned point, with little fuel margin remaining.
Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface on July 20, 1969. Aldrin followed about 20 minutes later. They spent more than two and a half hours outside the lunar module, deploying the Early Apollo Scientific Experiments Package, photographing the landing site, inspecting the spacecraft, and collecting lunar samples. The surface traverse stayed close to Eagle, but the work established the basic pattern for later Apollo landings: field observation, sample collection, surface photography, and instrument deployment.
Apollo 11 spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on the lunar surface before Eagle lifted off to rejoin Columbia. The crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24, 1969, after a flight of 195 hours, 18 minutes, and 35 seconds. The mission fulfilled a national political and engineering goal, but its importance did not end at Tranquility Base. Apollo samples showed that the dark lunar maria were ancient volcanic lavas more than 3.6 billion years old. They also helped scientists develop the idea that the early Moon had once been largely molten. Apollo 11 became, at once, the first human arrival on another world and the beginning of sample-based lunar science.
