Mission Summary

Chandrayaan-3 was India’s third lunar mission and the country’s first successful soft landing on the Moon. Launched on July 14, 2023, by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the mission was designed to demonstrate safe lunar landing and rover operations after the landing failure of Chandrayaan-2 in 2019. On August 23, 2023, the Vikram lander touched down near the Moon’s south polar region, making India the fourth nation to achieve a successful soft landing on the Moon and the first to land in the vicinity of the lunar south pole.

After landing, the Pragyan rover rolled onto the lunar surface and conducted experiments to study the composition and physical properties of the soil and rocks surrounding the landing site. The Vikram lander carried instruments that measured seismic activity, surface temperatures, and the lunar plasma environment, while the rover analyzed elemental composition using onboard spectrometers. Together, they operated successfully throughout one lunar day, completing all of their planned scientific objectives.

Chandrayaan-3 was a landmark achievement for India’s space program and a major milestone in global lunar exploration. The mission demonstrated ISRO’s capability to perform precision lunar landings and expanded scientific knowledge of the Moon’s south polar region, an area considered important for future human and robotic exploration.
