Mission Summary
The second consecutive success for NASA's upgraded Block III series, Ranger 8 transmitted 7,137 close-up photographs of the Moon before impact, greatly improving knowledge of potential landing terrain. With the baseline camera technology fully proven by the previous mission, the goal for Ranger 8 shifted from simply proving the design worked to performing crucial reconnaissance work for the future human landings.
The voyage across space proceeded without any major issues. Ground controllers completed a routine mid-course tracking adjustment, keeping the probe on a highly accurate flight path aimed directly at the smooth equatorial lowlands.
The primary target was the Sea of Tranquility, a region scientists highly favored for the first astronaut missions because of its relatively flat terrain. On February 20, 1965, during the final twenty-three minutes of its approach, Ranger 8 turned on its six television cameras exactly as programmed. As it accelerated toward the ground, the probe transmitted thousands of high-resolution images back to Earth. Instead of diving straight down, the spacecraft approached at a sharp angle, allowing its cameras to sweep across a much wider swath of geography than before. The probe captured highly detailed views of the lunar craters and plains right up until it slammed into the surface, providing essential maps that directly helped planners choose the exact landing spot where humans would first walk four years later.
